History of the Golf Alliance

Horizons (formerly Cope Foundation) has been working in Cork since 1957 providing support for people with an intellectual disability and/or autism. The organisation currently supports 2,800 people in 70+ locations across Cork city and county. Over the years, our approach, our structure and even our name has changed but our mission remains the same.

To support people with an intellectual disability and/or autism to live a life of their choosing, connected and participating in their communities.

The Cope Golf Alliance

The Golf Alliance was established in 1977 and the first year of play was in 1978. Membership of the alliance is limited to 480 members consisting of 60 ladies and 60 gents from each of the following clubs:

  • Cork

  • Douglas

  • Monkstown

  • Muskerry

The season commences in April of each year and ends in October and consists of 4 gents singles events, 4 ladies singles events, a gents team event, a ladies team event and a mixed event at the end of the season.

Since its foundation the golf alliance has raised in excess of €1.75 million in support of Horizons services and presently raises on average €40,000.00 pa. The Board of Directors, Management, staff and the people Horizons support are indebted to the members of the Golf Alliance, the four Cork golf clubs and the competition sponsors for their continued and loyal support.

Horizons Services - How Fundraised income impacts lives

Fundraised income supports Horizons to empower people to live 'Your Life, Your Way'. It helps to purchase houses so that people can live more independent lives in their community; develop person-centered assistive technology projects which promote independence, control and choice; fund activities and experiences so that people can try new things, visit new places and make connections; as well as purchase much-needed resources and equipment for the day and residential centres.
